Rockets to sign Fred VanVleet to three-year, $130 million contract

(SportsRadio 610) - Houston is getting its top free agent target this offseason, veteran point guard Fred VanVleet.

The Rockets and VanVleet have agreed to a three-year, $130 million contract, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Friday evening.

The Rockets entered this free agency period with more than $60 million in cap space, with intentions to use all of it on veterans who could improve a young team that has won no more than 22 games each of the past three seasons.

In VanVleet, the Rockets get an experienced, winning point guard who helps both their overall shooting and basketball intelligence. VanVleet won a championship with the Toronto Raptors' 2018-19 team. He shoots 37.3 percent from 3 for his career and averaged a career-high 7.2 assists last season.

The Rockets, however, were last in the NBA in both 3-point shooting percentage and assists per game.

It will be interesting to see how this impacts Kevin Porter Jr., the Rockets' starting point guard of the last couple of seasons who be better suited either on the wing, or off the bench leading the second unit.

The Rockets also just drafted Amen Thompson with the No. 4 overall pick.
