The U.S. Men's National Team is moving on in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the Round of 32 on Wednesday night.
Folarin Balogun broke a scoreless tie just before halftime, finishing off a deflected pass in the 45th minute to give the Americans a 1-0 lead. It was his third goal of the tournament.
The match took a dramatic turn in the 64th minute when Balogun was shown a red card following a VAR review, forcing the United States to play the remainder of the match with 10 men. Despite being down a player, the Americans remained organized defensively and added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when Malik Tillman curled a free kick into the net.
The victory sends the United States to the Round of 16 for the first time since 2022 and marks the program's first knockout-stage win at a World Cup since 2002. It also gives head coach Mauricio Pochettino his third victory of the tournament.
The Americans will now face Belgium on July 6 with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line. Balogun will miss the match because of his suspension following the red card.
