(WFAN) -- Yankees pitcher Domingo German was placed on Administrative Leave under the Joint MLB-MLBPA Domestic Violence Policy, the league announced on Thursday.
"We fully support all measures being undertaken by the Commissioners’ Office pursuant to the Policy on Domestic Violence," the Yankees said in a statement. "We support this policy which reinforces that domestic violence has no place in our society and cannot be tolerated.
"We have followed the lead of Major League Baseball and will continue to provide our complete cooperation throughout the investigative process. We reserve any further comment until the investigation reaches its conclusion. All questions pertaining to this matter should be directed to the Office of the Commissioner."
According to The Athletic's Lindsey Adler, there was no police report filed involving German and the issue was brought directly to the league on Tuesday.
German's leave may "last up to seven days, barring an extension" according to the league's policy. The Office of the Commissioner has commenced an investigation into the matter that led to German being placed under administrative leave.
The alleged incident occured sometime after the Yankees returned from their three-game road trip against the Toronto Blue Jays, according to TMZ Sports. There are conflicting reports about what exactly happened.
Per The New York Times' Bob Klapisch, German slapped his girlfriend during an argument that was witnessed by an official with the Commisioner's office. Adler pushes back against that report, saying the incident occured at German's home late Monday or early Tuesday and was not witnessed by any official with the league.
"Brian (Cashman) and I will both address the team as a group later on," Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Thursday. "We will do that today and just offer our support to guys and kind of work through this as a team."
The Yankees also announced that German was placed on the Restricted List. Putting German on the list makes it possible for the Yankees to fill the void left by the 27-year-old on the roster. New York signed pitcher Michael King to a Major League contract, selecting him to the active roster as a result of German's leave.
A native of the Dominican Republic, German recently pitched in New York's 3-2 loss to the Angels on Wednesday.
German was traded to the Yankees in 2014. He's in the middle of his third season with the team, where his 18 wins are the second most among American League pitchers — surpassing his previous career mark (4). He also has a 4.03 ERA through 143 innings pitched.
The Yankees entered Thursday with a chance to clinch the AL East as their magic number is at one. There's no indication if German will be a part of the Yankees postseason roster with nine games left in the regular season.
