Mastodon are busy finalizing an epic follow up to their 2017 hit album Emperor of Sand, posting a cryptic image from the studio.
“Guess what’s happening?” the caption reads from the band’s account. Fans get a bird’s eye view of drummer Brann Dailor’s massive drum kit and piles of equipment, ready to rock. There have been a few setbacks in producing a new album. The group was forced to table their early 2019 efforts in exchange for a 10th anniversary tour of 2009’s Crack the Skye.
Dailor spoke with Consequence of Sound earlier this year and assured fans there is cache of material waiting to drop in their new release. “Fortunately, or unfortunately, we’ve added to the pile, so now there’s like 30 or 35 songs. We’re really zeroing in on the stuff that’s definitely gonna make the album.”

The Atlanta rockers also made a stop at the Adult Swim Festival, Friday. They ripped a psychedelic five song performance which featured the live debut of “Once More ‘Round The Sun.’” The rest of the set included “Thickening”, “Steambreather”, “The Motherload”, and “Blood and Thunder.” Each member was splashed with glow in the dark paint.
The group has been plenty busy on other projects during the coronavirus quarantine. The wrote a new song for the long-awaited Bill & Ted sequel, Bill & Ted Face the Music movie. They also contributed to an all-star group of rockers paying tribute to one of prog rock’s greatest band’s, Rush, with a cover of the classic "Anthem.”
