The Def Leppard guitarist spoke with Inside Hook and revealed the simple reason why he’s often shirtless when he’s on stage. “I do look good!”
At 63 years old, Collen says he has no issue going shirtless when on stage. Part of it is to credit the hard work he puts into his fitness, but the other part is plain showbusiness.
“I get hot on stage, but also, I do look good!” He said.
“Maybe it’s shallow, but that’s OK. I’m a performer, musician and artist. And performing is this whole thing. On stage, I want to look like a rock star.”
Collen puts in a ton of work to maintain his physique. He’s been a vegan for decades and has extensively studied kickboxing and Muay Thai. However, he says one of the keys to success is making fitness a social activity, which is something he’s done with members of Def Leppard and their crew.
He cited the band’s Las Vegas residency a few years back as an example. During the day, the band and crew would get together and work out behind the stage.
“You would think rock stars shouldn’t have to do this stuff, but we all did it and it became this really cool, social thing,” he said.
“Always evaluate yourself,” Collen sagely concluded. “What worked last year might not work this year. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle, you gotta figure it out. Navigate with the tools you’ve got.”
