As reported by Rolling Stone, Phil Lesh — co-founder and bass player for the Grateful Dead — died peacefully on Friday morning at the age of 84. The band took to social media to confirm his passing with a statement.

“Phil Lesh, bassist and founding member of the Grateful Dead, passed peacefully this morning,” it reads. “He was surrounded by his family and full of love.”

The statement continued on to share some of Phil’s greatest accomplishments and effects of his bright personality. “Phil brought immense joy to everyone around him and leaves behind a legacy of music and love. We request that you respect the Lesh family’s privacy at this time.” No cause of death was given.

Lesh’s death comes days after the Grateful Dead was named MusiCares’ 2025 Persons of the Year, an honor that recognizes their contributions to music, philanthropic efforts, and their role in fostering communities through concerts and activism.

Band members, including Lesh, were scheduled to receive their awards at the 34th annual Persons of the Year benefit gala, taking place January 31, 2025 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. It all comes in tandem with the band's celebration of their 60th anniversary as one the most influential bands in American history.
