It’s not… not a residency

U2 has partnered with the tech- focused venue Sphere to announce a number of groundbreaking live shows, which will be their first live performances in nearly four years.

But what will really make these shows stand out is the experience the venue promises. Akin to the omni-theaters or observatories you might find in interactive museums, The Sphere will host a fully immersive visual and audio experience. Audience members will sit (or stand) in front of the curved screen, which boasts the “highest resolution LED screen on earth” as the show takes place around them. This is in addition to the reported, “crystal-clear audio to every guest”. And if that wasn’t enough, the venue is also capable of delivering environmental effects like temperature changes or scents. Thus, Sphere will put U2’s ‘UV Achtung Baby’ in full 4-D.

“It’s the venue and it’s the technology that is really the catch for us, and the hook.” The Edge told Variety. “Because when we found out about what this venue was really offering us creatively, we just were completely intrigued. And the more we found out, we kind of saw it as a throwdown… as a challenge.”

The technology isn’t the only new aspect of these shows, but even the ticket sales are reimagined. This show promises tickets starting at $140 with all-in pricing, meaning that the total cost with fees and taxes will be included in that face value amount. Furthermore, The Sphere venue has an 18,000 seated capacity, which ensures both availability and lower pricing.

Ultimately, it’s not quite an arena and not quite a Las Vegas Residency either. “I mean, it’s a run of shows, for sure, but it’s not like we’re having to move to Vegas for the year,” The Edge said. “Because of the size of the venue, the scope of this run will be probably a maximum of six weeks.”

Tickets for this concert experience are on presale for U2.com subscribers now, but available for the general public starting Friday, April 28.
