The current pause in touring has kept artists on their creative toes, and superstar Jason Derulo is a prime example.
In the months that we have all been coping with the spread of the coronavirus, and as venues, bars, and businesses have been forced to shutter, Jason has found a new outlet for his ideas with his massively viral TikTok videos.
“It’s been good spending time at the crib,” he tells RADIO.COM’s Julia during our latest RADIO.COM LIVE Check In. “In a life where you spend all of your time on the road, to just be home in my own space has been refreshing, honestly.”
Keeping fans engaged while under quarantine, Jason has been pumping out original content on the popular video sharing platform TikTok (and sharing them widely) on a daily basis, but he says he’s trying to work on a tighter schedule in order to keep up the high quality.
“I’m trying to do a shoot schedule so there’s a balance,” he explains. “But I was definitely doing every day at one point, but at the level of content that I want to release, there just has to be a little bit of separation because there’s a lot of special effects and crazy stuff that goes on.”
As far as the creative process goes, Jason jokingly says he tries to eat a big meal before going to bed, so he ends up waking up with fresh ideas. “It just comes out of nowhere, honestly” he says in all seriousness. “Life is content, right? There’s so many things that happen on a day-to-day basis where I’m like, ‘oh that’s a TikTok…’ the ideas just kind of pop out of nowhere. Then, sometimes I’ll do collaborations with different people where they’ll bring their concepts forth, but I’d say about 90% of what I post is from my ideas.”
With new music and a lucrative influencer career taking shape, operating as a free agent after being released from his record label was the fuel that has kicked his creative fire into overdrive, he says. That, and having a chance to be in his own space at home.
“Having that personal space and waking up in the same bed,” he finds makes it easier for him to come up with unique ideas. “It’s a lot easier to be creative with a routine as opposed to being in a different country every single day.”
Derulo made news back at the end of September, after becoming the first and, so far, only solo artist to top the Billboard Pop Songs chart across the 2000s, the 2010s, and now the 2020s. His new single “Savage Love,” which was only released in June of 2020, officially cemented him in the Billboard history books along with his previous smash hits, "Whatcha Say" (2009), "In My Head" (2010), "Talk Dirty" ft. 2 Chainz (2014), and "Want to Want Me "(2015).
“Take You Dancing” is another new release, which definitely has fans itching for a time when partying and getting together with friends becomes a reality once again.
Jason is proud of the way “Savage Love” highlights an unhealthy relationship described in the lyrics, set over a high-energy, danceable beat. “I feel like the juxtaposition of worlds coming together really makes this push and pull, cool feeling song that just kind of cuts through.”
Jason shot the video for “Take You Dancing” inside his home – a situation that he says came with its own set of “casualties.” “Furniture and the floors,” all seem to have been dinged up during the shoot. But hey, he likes working from home, right?!
Luckily he's always got a crew of handymen available to patch up any walls, as he admits he’s broken plenty of household items while knocking around the house in 2020. We just can’t wait to see what he’s got in store for us next!
