Lawmakers in Austin have filed a bill that will give Texans the opportunity in November to vote on whether or not we legalize casinos and sports gambling in the Lone Star State.

Republican Rep. Charlie Geren of Fort Worth filed the bill on Friday, just a few months after a similar bill was filed by Sen. Carol Alvarado, D-Houston in the Texas Senate.

Geren said in a statement per the Dallas Morning News, "Polling over the last year makes it clear that more than 85% of Texans want the right to vote on this issue, (R)epublicans and (D)emocrats alike.

"It is high time that the legislature listens to the voters and allow them to decide this issue. I, for one, am not in the business of denying the voters of Texas their voice when their preference is so clear."

After the Supreme Court overturned the federal ban on sports gambling in 2018, 36 states legalized the practice.

The resolution, House Joint Resolution 97, would allow for up to seven casino destination resorts: two each in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston areas, and one each in the San Antonio, McAllen, and Corpus Christi areas.
