A handful of school districts in Kansas and Missouri canceled classes Friday because of extremely cold temperatures.
A high pressure system pushed early morning temperatures to the single digits in Kansas City. The air was much colder in rural areas, particularly around the Missouri/Iowa border.
"We're seeing temperatures in the minus teens up in that area, with wind chills in the minus 20s," said Jimmy Barham, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill.
Temperatures were forecast to reach the 30s by Friday afternoon, slightly above freezing.
A similar cold snap, with single digit lows, is expected to hit the Kansas City area on January 30 and 31, Barham said.
