The Kansas City Council's planning and zoning committee has passed and sent to the full council an ordinance that would cap the height of new construction around the County Club Plaza at 45 feet.

The issue picked up a head of steam when Legacy Development announced plans to tear down the Christ Scientist Church at 47th and Pennsylvania, to replace it with a 12-story mixed use development.

There are two reasons to impose height restrictions, said Dan Coffran, former city councilman and current board member of Historic Kansas City.
