Kansas City police say an off-duty officer is okay after shooting a suspect.
The incident happened shortly before 2:15 p.m. Thursday near 14th Street and Bellefontaine Avenue. Someone summoned the off-duty officer about a disturbance. The officer arrived to find a man who was shooting at a man and woman.
"He was chasing the woman around the car just to end her life," said Anthony Alainz, who heard gunshots and screaming as he was working nearby. "The shooter, he's just cold-hearted. He didn't want any witnesses, that's for sure."
The officer shot the 31-year-old gunman in the leg, police say. The suspect was taken into custody.
"That was his job -- (the officer) reacted calmly, did not get fear, scared, anything," Alainz said. "The dude saved that woman's life, period. Not just her, he saved us."
Officers located a 29-year-old man who died from his injuries. A second victim is expected to recover.
