Kansas City, MO - The polar vortex sweeping into Kansas City is cause for concern among pet owners.

No pet is safe when it comes to these cold temps, if left unprotected.

Tori Fugate with KC Pet Project warns pet owners to bring pets inside, but if that's not an option, make sure you have resources available.

"An insulated dog house or a cat condo area where a cat can go in and get out of the elements. Be sure to have straw and blankets and be sure they have access to fresh, not frozen water."

Both Hypothermia and frostbite are major concerns for pets left outside.

"If they have a bluish or white tint to their skin, it means that they have a lack of blood flow there."

Fugate says if you notice these signs, you need to act fast using a warm towel strait from the dryer, but do NOT use hot water to treat areas. This could potentially cause blistering. If serious, seek veterinary care immediately.  A warning has been issued by the city of Missouri that if pets are left out unprotected, they will be collected and taken to the shelter.
