Kansas City, KS - The Kansas Click it or Ticket campaign kicks off starting on May 20th and running through June 2nd. Police will be out around the clock focusing on seat belt violations along with speeding, texting while driving, and DUI violations. Officer Danny Chavez with the Lenexa Police Departments says this campaign is aimed at drastically reducing the number of preventable deaths and injuries.
"We'll have extra folks out there looking specifically for people not wearing their seatbelts," says officer Chavez.
Memorial Day weekend will be big for officers enforcing the violations. A lot of people will be traveling for vacation or even taking a trip to the lake. There will be extra officers throughout Kansas.
Seatbelt violations for adults are $30 and children $60, and that's not counting the 108 dollar court cost charge. Officer Chavez says it only takes a second to buckle up, and for those young eyes watching, it creates a habit from a young age that can save a life.
Police can stop vehicles and issue tickets when they see anyone riding without being properly restrained. Occupants, ages 14 and over, are cited individually. If a passenger under the age of 14 is unrestrained the driver will be cited.
This activity is supported by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation
