Kansas City, MO - The ACLU of Missouri is interested in speaking with family members, loved ones and friends of those who have died while incarcerated in Missouri jails or prisons.
"They have concerns. We have seen an increase in the last two years. And I would say, we have seen approximately five to seven more than usual," says Elaine Sutton, who is heading up the effort.
That's up nearly 50% from the previous year. There's a triage process for inmates, much like in a hospital, but Sutton questions if needs are being addressed properly.
"We're kinda concerned as to whether or not these needs are being addressed on the front end. If they are given access to necessary medical treatments, especially maternal health care," says Sutton.
Sutton says they hope to pinpoint why the deaths are happening and to find a solution.
The ACLU of Missouri’s Intake Complaint Unit is open for calls at 314-652-3114, ext. 305, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
People can make requests for in-person interviews now.
In-person interviews will be held on Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. beginning Feb. 29.
