Kansas City, MO - A new law in Florida will allow some teachers to carry firearms in schools.  There's been an effort to do the same in Missouri.

Aaron Dorr, policy advisor with the pro-gun lobby group Missouri Firearms Coalition, says they backed two similar bills, but neither made it far in Jefferson City.

"I think it's obvious now, we can all kind of agree that gun-free-zones are anything but. In fact, they serve as a magnet to madmen who are trying to attack societies most vulnerable citizens," says Dorr.

He says the idea is not to force teachers to carry, but to give them the option. He feels that if they're legally allowed to do so, they should be able to after going through a training program.

Dorr says too many teachers and coaches have given their lives using their body to shield kids.

"Our goal is to give them the option of turning around and putting five shots in that madman's chest instead of taking those five shots in their own, explains Dorr.

In Florida, teachers wishing to carry firearms in schools must pass psychological and drug screening, and complete 144 hours of firearm training.
