Man wounded in shootout with police, nearby elementary school put on lockdown

Fairway, KS - A man was taken into custody after exchanging gunfire at a house at 62nd and Roe Ave.

Polcie say they were called to the scene around 2:00pm on a report of a window being shot out.

A standoff with officers ensued.

Highlands Elementary School is directly across the street from the house, and was placed on lockdown during the standoff.

Just after 3:00pm police say the man, in his 20s, came out of the house firing a weapon.  Officers shot him, wounding him.

He was arrested.

Parents of students were notified of the reason behind the lockdown.

Students have been released to their parents.
