Kansas City, MO - Most salivate thinking of all the turkey and fixings that will soon grace Thanksgiving tables everywhere. But if you have diabetes, tucking in to such a meal is more difficult.

"Being a little bit forgiving of yourself, above all not overeating, avoiding concentrated sweets, and then take a walk after the big meal, check your blood sugar," explains Dr. David Robbins, director of the Diabetes Institute at the University of Kansas Health System

Robbins says you'll also need to watch the alcohol, as it can block your ability to detect low blood sugar.

According to Robbins, "People who are taking insulin have a hypoglycemic reaction. If they have a lot of alcohol on board, they're not able to properly respond to that. They can have a prolonged episode of low blood sugar."

If you're going to have alcohol, Robbins suggests a non-sweet drink with food.

If you're hosting the big meal, he advises hosts to call your diabetic guests ahead of time for suggestions.

Vegetables and fresh fruit are always a win.
