People in Kansas City who believe the city towed their vehicles by mistake have a new refund policy that may be in their favor.
The city developed a program in response to a lawsuit that was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. People whose cases hit all the marks get their money back.
The ACLU of Missouri sued the city and the Board of Police Commissioners for what it called predatory impound and towing practices. Tow fees for most vehicles can run $265 and storage fees are $30 a day.
"You can get up to seven days (of storage fees) refunded, unless you prove that you are Indigent, in which case you can get up to 14 days refunded," said Chris Hernandez, city spokesman.
People have up to 60 days from the date their cars are towed to apply for refunds. They also have up to 30 days from the date of the verdict, if they receive parking tickets and are found not guilty of offenses listed on the tickets.
The city has posted refund details on its website. Refund applications can be filled out online, in person or mailed.
