KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A farm in Kansas City, Kansas focusing on sustainability and education is a finalist for a $25,000 grant from State Farm.
KC Farm School, located just off Gibbs Road in KCK, educates Kansas Cityians young and old about where their food comes from.
Alicia Ellingsworth, founder and Executive Director of the KC Farm School, said it's important for kids to see and experience a working farm.
"Our mission is to empower people really of all ages, abilities and ancestries to get on-farm, hands-on experience and to connect with their communities, and really themselves," Ellingsworth said.
"We teach kids about how it's not scary to sweat, and how wonderful it feels to be outside under the blue sky with a breeze," Ellingsworth said. "But definitely, we make it sound lighthearted. So the work is fun and rewarding work."
Funds from the grant would be put to good use, with plans for expanding the organization's educational outreach and programming in the works.
You can vote for the KC Farm School to win a $25,000 grant from State Farm beginning Wednesday, August 14.
