
Kansas City, MO - A registered nurse at Research Medical Center has died from COVID-19.
Celia Yap-Banago had worked for nearly 40 years at Research Medical Center and according to collegues she had planned to retire next week.
Timaira Smith worked with Celia Yap-Banago and said everyone loved her and she was strong and full of energy.
"Sassy, you know? Just hand on her hip, real loud, 'I'm here!' But she was also the most helpful. She was a master of a lot of things," Smith said.
She said Yap-Banago was a dedicated professional and always helped others. She said that when she became sick, she quarantined at home.
"She was just funny and goofy, and hilarious. God, I am going to miss her," Smith said.
Friends, co-workers and fellow nurses plan to hold a vigil to honor Yap-Banago on Thursday at 8 p.m. on the sidewalk outside Research Medical Center.
Research Medical Center is part of the HCA Midwest Health System.
The hospital's CEO, Ashley McClellan, issued a statement on the passing of Celia Yap-Banago:
"We are heartbroken by the passing of our colleague. It is difficult to put into words what Celia means to our hospital and to the countless number of patients she cared for.
"Celia was beloved by everyone who knew her. Her impact on the nursing profession and to those she worked, with will be everlasting due to the mentorship, training, support and guidance she provided our colleagues.
"We offer our deepest sympathies to her family and friends, and all who she blessed along the way. We are reminded of the courage she and our nursing family exhibit every day."
