The Kansas City Police Department is recognizing one of its officers with the Medal of Valor, the force's highest honor.

Officer Jared Tipton will be presented with the medal before the board of police commissioners Tuesday to recognize his actions from last June.

Tipton was at home and off-duty when he heard shots ring out nearby. Tipton grabbed his gun and badge and ran toward the sound of shots, worried it was an active shooter at the large church or the gas station nearby.

Tipton found people in two cars shooting at each other in the gas station parking lot. One of the bullets flew into a nearby home, hitting a four-year-old in the arm. Another went into a car where a five-year-old was taking cover.

Officer Tipton is credited with single-handedly chasing down one of the shooters and taking him into custody.
