An organization based in Belton has donated more than 7.1 million blankets nationwide to children who are ill or facing traumatic situations.
Project Linus was named after the beloved Peanuts character Linus van Pelt, a little boy who has been known for decades for his intelligence and the comfort he takes in his security blanket.
The national non-profit organizes hundreds of volunteers, known as Blanketeers, to make blankets, quilts, afghans and other comfy coverings.
The blanket provide a lot of comfort and a pleasant distraction, said Patty Gregory, CEO of the Greater Kansas City chapter of Project Linus.
"When they give the child a blanket, they cuddle up with that blanket and it seems to ease their minds a little bit," Gregory said.
Anyone with some sewing, crocheting or knitting skills can become a Blanketeer, including children.
Events are hosted each month for people to gather and create the unique blankets.
