Construction is underway on an apartment complex in Springfield, Missouri to help children in the foster care system transition into adulthood.

The Good Samaritan Boys Ranch is working with the state to help equip young people in a way they have not done before.

A dorm-like group home and rental apartments are already operating in the Springfield area, but this will be different, said Casey Wray, Good Samaritan vice president of operations.

"We are building an eight-unit apartment complex," Wray said. "It's really meant to bridge that gap, so it give kids an opportunity to experience what it's like, but also be close enough for support if they need it."

Youngsters who are suddenly thrust into adult living may not have the kind of support they need to build successful lives, Wray said.

"If you don't have some strong connections, if you don't have some life skills under your belt, especially if you spent time in foster care, you really are at a disadvantage," Wray said.

Good Samaritan is also building an office next to the complex that offers a variety of services, including counseling. The apartments will be available to young adults 18 to 21 who have been in the foster care system or who are homeless.

Construction is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

The overall mission of Good Samaritan Boys Ranch is to assist abused and neglected children become productive adults.
