The Kansas City Water Department is asking customers to conserve water because flooding along the Missouri River has impaired the treatment process for drinking supplies.

The river is the source for water in the city. The greatest concern is for infants, senior citizens and people with compromised immune systems.

With the snow melt and flooding to the North there is too much water to process before it comes out of the tap.

In some ways the water is too clean because the river has not had the chance to absorb minerals that assist in the treatment process, but water at the tap is safe, said Mike Klender, manager of the drinking water facility.

"The water quality may be different, the water may have a little taste, the water may have a little odor, the water may have a little color, but the water is safe to drink," Klender said.

KC Water will continue to monitor water quality and will adjust treatment in response to changing river conditions, Klender said.
