MO HealthNet, Missouri's Medicaid program, is offering new treatment options for patients with chronic pain.
"Physical therapy, cognative-behavioral therapy, mental health therapy can sometimes help with pain, chiropractic and also accupuncture" said Todd Richardson, MO HealthNet director.
MO HealthNet will cover a variety of therapies with the goal of giving people alternatives to opioids. The state and patients could save millions of dollars every year.
"We expect to see a significant reduction in the cost of the prescription drugs that would normally be used here," Richardson said. "We also expect to see a reduction in the number of emergency department visits, hospital stays and surgery."
The new treatment coverage options begin Monday, April 1.
