Northland residents went to City Hall to voice their continuing frustration about trash service in their neighborhoods.

People said their concerns have not been resolved. The main problem is failure to pick up garbage as scheduled on a consistent basis.

"Since the beginning of the year I have had three days that my trash or recycling have been picked up, and one of them was last week," said Theresa Mihalka at a meeting of the City Council.

Private contractors cover trash pickup in the Northland and on the south side of Kansas City. The city council is considering eliminating private haulers and taking over the trash service with public employees and trucks.

"It is more important to be effective than, in come cases, to be efficient, because you have to get the trash off the ground," said Michael Shaw, Kansas City Solid Waste Manager.

"There are multiple names and responses on every page," said Heather Hall, councilwoman, as she thumbed through a thick binder filled with complaint forms. "They are very unhappy."
