Kansas City, MO - The National Weather Service (NWS) has estimated the tornado that tore through Douglas and Leavenworth Counties was an EF-4 with maximum winds of 170 miles per hour.
The tornado began south of Lawrence, Kansas Tuesday afternoon and travelled about 32 miles before lifting in Leavenworth County.
The rain-wrapped monster was estimated to be a mile wide at its greatest, says the NWS
In Missouri, assessment teams determined the tornado that touched down in Clay County was an EF-2, with estimated peak winds of 115 miles an hour.
That twister one was on the ground for nearly 6 miles and was 400 yards wide. And it developed from the same storm system that spawned the Kansas tornado, along the same track.
