Overland Park police officer killed in shootout with hit-and-run suspect

Overland Park, KS - Police officer Michael Mosher, 37, died after exchanging gunfire with a suspect in a hit-and-run crash.

Mosher was a 15-year veteran of the Overland Park Police Department.  


A department spokesperson says Mosher was on his way to work Sunday when he witnessed a hit-and-run crash at 143rd Street and Antioch Road.

He followed the fleeing car and radioed in the incident.

The suspect stopped at 123rd and Mackey Street.

As Mosher approached the car the suspect fired a weapon at him.  Mosher returned fire and both were struck, according to Officer John Lacy. 

The suspect died at the scene and Mosher was taken to a hospital and died of his wounds there.

Officer Mosher leaves behind a wife and a daughter.

The Overland Park Police Department has not lost an officer in the line of duty since Officer Deanna Rose was killed in 1985.

The suspect has been identified Phillip Michael Carney, 38, of Overland Park.  He died at the scene.

The Johnson County Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team (OISIT) is conducting an investigation of the incident.
