Johnson County prosecutors filed three felony charges against a 21 year old man from Shawnee in connection with a blackmail scheme against a female middle school student.
Logan Paul Clements is charged with attempted rape of a child under the age of 14, blackmail and electronic solicitation.
The girl's parents called police after they took control over their 13-year-old's mobile phone at the end of winter break. They found suspicious content that indicated the girl was being victimized.
"That's so important for parents to have those candid converstations about the fact that there are individuals out there that are looking to prey on kids like themselves, and how to protect themselves and how to say no," said Stephen Howe, Johnson County District Attorney.
Prosecutors allege Clements first made contact with the girl on an online gaming platform. He threatened her with killing her family if she did not send him nude photos. When she went along with it, Clements threatened to share the photos with the girl's Facebook friends if she did not sent more, court papers say.
Online predation is not a rare phenomenon.
"My concern is how many cases are out there that we don't know about," Howe said.
