Kansas City, MO - Government entities in most of the Kansas City metropolitan area begin the first steps of reopening businesses and government offices Monday, May 11th, several weeks after the beginning of shelter-at-home orders were enacted to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Kansas City, Missouri will begin Phase 1 of its plan on Friday, May 15.
In all cases, people are strongly advised to wear masks in public where they can't control social distancing and to maintain proper physical distancing of six feet or more from others.
In these first phases, restaurants and bars that serve food (outside of KCMO) are allowed to open to dine-in customers, with restricted seating to maintain social distancing.
Wyandotte County, which has been hardest-hit by COVID-19, is the exception, and will only allow carryout and delivery service at restaurants for the time being.
Personal care businesses where social distancing cannot be maintained are required to remain closed in Kansas throughout Phase 1 of the reopening plan. This includes barber shops, hair salons, nail salons and tattoo parlors. Gyms, yoga studios and other exercise facilities are also restricted from opening.
Public gatherings in Kansas continue to be restricted to 10 people or fewer.
In Kansas, Phase 2 of the reopening plan will begin no sooner than May 18. Phase 3 starts no sooner than June 1, and Phase 4, full reopening, will start no sooner than June 15. Health and government officials will monitor conditions to determine whether to proceed with the next phase.
