Update: Teen charged in Crossroads shooting that killed innocent bystander

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City police announced Sunday they had made an arrest in the Friday night death of a young  woman who was attending First Friday festivities in the Crossroads district.

Police identified the suspect as Deon'te Copkney, 18, of Kansas City. He was reportedly one of three people who were seen running from the scene after shots were fired. Copkney was seen dropping a handgun that was later determined to have been used in the death of Erin Langhofer, 25, of Overland Park, police said.

Copkney is charged in Jackson County with second-degree murder and two weapons counts.

Original Story: Kansas City Police believe a young woman who was shot to death Friday evening in the Crossroads Arts District was an innocent bystander.

The violence broke out around 10 p.m. Friday near 18th and Main. People were still in the area taking part in First Friday events.

Police say the incident began with some kind of fight. They found the injured woman, in her 20s, near a food truck. She died shortly after she was taken to a hospital.

Police said they had taken in three people for questioning.
