It’s official—after four years of dating and two years of being engaged, Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez are no longer an item. The former power couple publicly announced their breakup in a joint statement Thursday, telling the Today Show, “We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so.”

A-Rod and J-Lo’s split wasn’t much of a shocker after the two acknowledged a month ago they were “working through some things.” Lopez (who was recently spotted without her engagement ring) wasn’t mentioned when news broke over the weekend that an investment group led by Rodriguez was buying the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves for $1.5 billion, in stark contrast to last fall when J-Lo and A-Rod submitted a joint bid to purchase the New York Mets.

The couple’s attempt to reconcile last month may have been due to their shared business interests along with the fact that their children had become close. Either way, it looks like A-Rod and J-Lo are finally going their separate ways, a difficult reality Rodriguez—as evidenced by his latest Instagram story—appears to still be processing.

What you hear in the background playing over framed photos of the former Yankees slugger and his celebrity ex is “Fix You” by Coldplay, a song synonymous with grief and suffering. Forget putting on a brave face—Rodriguez isn’t even trying to hide his bleeding heart.

It looks like the emotionally-wounded Sunday Night Baseball announcer might need a weekend out with the boys to get his mojo back. Rodriguez’s heartache after ending things with one of the most famous popstars alive is understandable, but the breakup blues never last. As Lester Bangs (played brilliantly by the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman) told William in his memorable “uncool” monologue from Almost Famous, “Women will always be a problem for guys like us. Most of the great art in the world is about that very problem.” And we all know how much A-Rod loves art.

So buck up, Alex. Things will turn around soon enough. Just give it some time. And for god’s sake, stop listening to Coldplay.
