Some have dismissed the NBA Top Shot movement as a passing fad, and while that may ultimately prove true in the long run, the booming crypto collectable market is only gaining steam with no sign of taking its foot off the gas anytime soon. According to Tommy Beer of Forbes, NBA Top Shot has attracted 33,000 new users in the past week alone. The popular digital memorabilia platform has spurred close to a half million transactions totaling a remarkable $53.9 million during that timeframe.
Monday brought another landmark day on the Top Shot front with seven users—TV and podcast host Adam Lefkoe of Bleacher Report/Turner Sports among them—going in on a record $208,000 moment. The highlight features Lakers All-Star LeBron James skying for a monster, one-handed jam over Kings big man Nemanja Bjelica during a game in 2019. One of the top-ranked DFS players in the world, Peter Jennings (better known by his DraftKings and FanDuel handle CSURAM88) and Jeremy Levine, who previously purchased a $100,000 Zion Williamson Top Shot (a record at the time), also chipped in on the investment.
The NBA Top Shot craze has even begun to captivate some of the league’s players with Ja Morant, LaMelo Ball, CJ McCollum, Terry Rozier, JJ Redick, Spencer Dinwiddie, Clint Capela, Tacko Fall, Andre Igoudala, Cole Anthony and Josh Hart each expressing their curiosity, if not actively participating, in the movement.
The crypto collectable space is still a relatively untapped—and therefore volatile—market, though many suspect that Top Shot highlights will soon replace physical trading cards as the gold standard in sports memorabilia. If that becomes the case, then the forward-thinking Lefkoe, who can be seen hosting Inside the NBA Tuesday nights alongside Shaquille O’Neal, Dwyane Wade and Candace Parker on TNT, will be glad he got in on the ground floor.
