Countless professional athletes and coaches responded quickly to the shocking overtaking of the US Capitol by a mob of pro-Trump supporters on Wednesday.

Prominent sports figures, both former and present, took to social media to express their disbelief at the historic events unfolding in Washington, DC.

Most of the posts seemed to focus on the police response to Wednesday's protests, as contrasted with those that went on around the country in the summer.

Many athletes were active in protest actions that erupted in response to the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

"Where are the police?" NFL Hall of Famer turned Fox Sports analyst Shannon Shape asked on Wednesday.

"Do we think an all black protest group could've stormed the Capitol and not 1 shot fired, no tear gas."

Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman was among the hundreds to retweet Sharpe's post.

Many others, including 76ers head coach Doc Rivers, NBA legend Dwyane Wade and Cavaliers All-Star Kevin Love, echoed a similar sentiment.

Pelicans coach Stan Van Gundy likened the protest to "terrorism" while other NBA coaches also spoke about the troubling scenes they watched prior to their games on Wednesday night.

Some put the blame squarely on President Trump.

Others were simply exasperated by the ongoing political and social turmoil.
