Baker Mayfield won’t be facing any fines from his teammates this week.
The Cleveland Browns quarterback seamlessly slipped in three TLC songs in his postgame Zoom call with reporters following a 20-6 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football.
Mayfield has been slipping pop culture references in his postgame comments each week, which he revealed last week is part of a thing with the QB room where if he does not do it, he gets fined.
Mayfield has used Will Ferrell quotes, Snoop Dogg lyrics and Dwight Schrute quotes in previous postgame interviews, but Sunday was reserved for Atlanta-based hip-hop group TLC.
His first TLC reference came when asked about Colt McCoy.
“He’s just going to always have whatever team he’s playing for in the game and so we just have to stay in there and realize that as long as we don’t go chasing waterfalls, we’re going to be in the game,” he said, mentioning TLC’s 1994 hit “Waterfalls.”
In another question about Jarvis Landry, Mayfield responded, “We don’t want no scrubs. We’ve got some dogs outside. We’ve got some guys that we’re very proud of,” citing the 1999 single, “No Scrubs.”
Mayfield also worked in there 1994 No. 1 hit, “Creep.”
“We’re gonna get knocked back and we’re going to creep, creep back in and overcomes those penalties,” he said.
Not only is Mayfield’s quotes a reference to TLC, but it could also be construed as a reference to the Will Ferrell movie, “The Other Guys,” in which Michael Keaton’s character unknowingly makes references to the same three songs. \
Of course, making pop culture references are easier to do when the Browns are winning, and they could clinch a playoff spot next week against the Jets with a win and a Ravens, Colts or Dolphins loss.
