Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach and head coach Andy Reid go way back together.
Veach worked as an assistant on Reid’s staff with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004 before following him to Kansas City in 2013 and becoming GM in 2017.
Needless to say, the two have spent many long days and nights together over the last couple of decades, which usually means the two have some good stories to share.
Veach, in an interview with Kansas City 610 Sports Radio that aired on Wednesday, recalled one anecdote in particular that stick out to him that spans their time together from Philadelphia to Kansas City.
“When I was in Philly, working as his assistant, I remember being in his office…he asked me to come in, we were working on something, and the Philadelphia Phillies were playing in the World Series,” he said. “We had gotten into the tape watching, talking about something and all of a sudden you just heard this explosion of fireworks. It was amazing to see. In his office, it was dead on view of Citizen Bank Ballpark. From hearing the fireworks go off and hearing the firetruck and that city go crazy, he said, ‘one day, Brett, we’re going to have that experience.’”
Fast-forward to Kansas City in 2015, and Veach found himself in Reid’s office once again, this time with the Royals playing the New York Mets in the World Series.
“We’re watching it and we’re seeing the highlights around the city and the city was going crazy,” Veach said. “Coach kinda chuckled and looked at me and said, ‘Listen, I don’t know if we’ll ever win a Super Bowl, but I know wherever we go, we’ll bring a World Series to town.’”
Of course, the two did much more than that and brought a Super Bowl to town last February and are now looking to do it again.
“We joked about that and just this past week coach kinda referenced that,” Veach said. “He said ‘We come a long way Veach. A few years ago we were watching the Phillies celebrate and have that parade. We were fortunate to get one, finally, let’s go get another one.”
Veach said that it is those moments such as the late nights at the office that he often reflected on after the two finally won the Super Bowl last year.
"You reflect on your journey and all the things and hours you put in," he said. "…Like being in Philadelphia and the Phillies are winning it and imagining you doing that."
As for Reid, Veach said he’ll "just kinda sit back and take it all in.
"I think he just gets genuine joy and excitement for others in regards to celebrating it.”
