Spring training is upon us with pitchers and catchers due in their respective camps Wednesday. The onset of Grapefruit and Cactus League action can be an eye-opening experience for teams as they evaluate each players’ level of fitness. Clint Frazier will be put through that gauntlet soon enough, though for now, the Yankees outfielder seems more concerned about his cat’s physique than his own. And you probably would too if your feline, upon visiting the vet, received a body condition score of five out of nine.
Seriously—we’re throwing shade at cats now? Where will the body shaming end? But before we cue up the Garfield lasagna memes, an important clarification needs to be made. As one commenter (who happens to be a veterinary student) noted, a five on the body condition scale is actually “ideal,” compared to “too thin” (1-4) or “too heavy” (6-9). Purina describes cats who score in the five range as “well-proportioned” but with “minimal” abdominal fat pad and “palpable” ribs. So while Frazier’s cat may not have washboard abs like Magic Mike Era Channing Tatum, there’s no cause for concern.
The 26-year-old enjoyed a breakout 2020, his first season as a full-time big-leaguer after several years spent shuttling between New York and Scranton (home of the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate), posting a career-best .905 OPS while also being honored as a Gold Glove finalist in right field. Frazier will earn $2.1 million this upcoming season, which should keep his kitty well-fed for the foreseeable future. He’ll also have plenty to spend on his sneaker collection, which has grown considerably in recent years.
