Sports radio the Monday morning after the Super Bowl is always a must-listen. Radio veteran Colin Cowherd had obviously been looking forward to this day on the sports calendar for quite some time, but due to an unforeseen medical emergency, hosting duties instead fell to Nick Wright on Monday’s edition of The Herd with Colin Cowherd.

The 57-year-old addressed his absence Tuesday in a video posted to his Instagram account, revealing he was hospitalized over the weekend.

Cowherd complained of a sharp pain in his right pectoral area while eating dinner with his wife Saturday night. He was treated later that night after being rushed to the emergency room at Torrance Memorial Medical Center in greater Los Angeles. Cowherd had initially feared his symptoms were COVID-related, but instead, doctors discovered a small blood clot in his right lung. The Fox Sports host watched the Super Bowl from a hospital bed and even took notes in hopes he’d be able to do his show as normal Monday, but Cowherd eventually hit a wall.

“I was just exhausted,” said Cowherd, who was knocked out for a good “16-18 hours” after doctors supplied him with morphine. “I apologize for not being there on the biggest days of the year for my show.”

Cowherd said he has “no idea” what led to his blood clot, though he posited his hectic travel schedule of late, including skiing in high altitudes, may have been a factor. “I’m going to be back on the air as soon as I can,” Cowherd promised. “I went for a 30-minute walk today, which is amazing considering where I was 48 hours ago.”

Cowherd hopes he’ll have a clearer idea of his condition when his bloodwork comes back in a few days. “The support has been unbelievable. I mean really touching,” said Cowherd, appreciative of the well wishes he’s received from all his colleagues at Fox Sports.

“Colin, rest, get healthy. We’ve got you covered,” Wright expressed during Wednesday’s show. “Take your time, we’ll be okay. The audience misses you.”

A graduate of Eastern Washington State, Cowherd first came to prominence during his 12-year run at ESPN, eventually moving to Fox Sports, where he has hosted his show since 2015.
