The 3-minute video showcased a shortened overview of the Black Panther Party, originally called "the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense" and Chairman Fred Hampton. It incorporates both archival footage, along with the snippets from the Oscar-nominated film. Judas and the Black Messiah is up for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. Both Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield are both nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
The new visual breaks down all the Black Panthers did for their community while challenging "the America Justice System, calling it a system linked to the economic exploitation of Black communities." After Hampton became a target of local authorities and the FBI at 14 years old, they hired an informant, William O'Neal to infiltrate and dismantle. Hampton was assassinated by the FBI at 21 years old. The original "Fight For You" visual tells a story of then to now. H.E.R. opens the story with a poem with the scene set in New York, 1971.
"Last night, they killed one of us. Again. More fuel to a raging fire you can't pray away. Not with a gun pointed at your back or the ground at your face. I think back to what my father says, like strange fruit, it gets too bitter to taste," she says. In present day, former Black Panthers now organize in secrecy, but show the fight is always there. "Everybody has a different definition of what revolutionary is. But the fight is all the same— being Black in America. Day in and day out," the narrator expresses.
