After spending nine seasons as an assistant coach for the Tar Heels, Hubert Davis is set to become the next head coach of the UNC men's basketball program, according to a number of reports.

Davis shared a message with the UNC fan base upon the news becoming official.

Roy Williams, 70, announced his retirement last week — ironically, on April Fools' Day — and finished a legendary career with the third most wins in Division I history (903).

As noted by The Undefeated, Davis is the first Black head coach in program history.

Davis was a member of the Tar Heels as a player from 1988-1992, reaching the Final Four in 1991. A scintillating sharpshooter from beyond the arc, Davis shot an unbelievable 45.3% from three-point range his junior and senior seasons, averaging 17.3 points in that span. He recorded 21.4 points per game in is senior season, making him one of just three UNC players to average over 21 points since 1990, along with Antawn Jamison (22.2 PPG in 1997-98) and Tyler Hansbrough (22.6 points in 2007-08).

That lethal accuracy from deep continued into his NBA career, which began after the Knicks selected him with the 20th overall pick in 1992. His 44.1 percent three-point percentage currently ranks second all-time, in between Steve Kerr (45.4 percent) and Seth Curry (44.0 percent). In the 1999-00 season, spent with the Mavericks, he led the league with a 49.1 percent stroke from long range.

Davis was among some other candidates to succeed Williams, including UNC Greensboro head coach Wes Miller.

The 2020-21 Tar Heels welt 18-11, and 10-6 in the ACC, but was outed in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as the No. 8 seed against No. 9 Wisconsin.
