Jaguars clinch first overall pick in 2021 NFL Draft

Trevor Lawrence is officially – or, as officially as it gets before the actual 2021 NFL Draft – on the clock for Jacksonville.

The Jets’ 23-16 win over Cleveland, combined with Jacksonville’s 41-17 loss to Chicago, officially clinches the No. 1 pick for the 1-14 Jaguars, and locks a now 2-13 Gang Green into the No. 2 pick next spring.

The two teams could still finish tied at 2-14 if the Jets lose next week in New England and the Jags win in Indianapolis, but Jacksonville has officially clinched a weaker strength of schedule, which is the first tiebreaker among non-playoff teams for draft position.

In the span of three weeks, the Jets went from 0-12 and firing their defensive coordinator to 2-13 and locked out of the No. 1 pick – quite a span for a team that, in consecutive weeks, had chances to be just the third 0-16 team in NFL history, and then the first team to go 1-15 or worse and not get the No. 1 pick.

The rub in all this? Lawrence, the Clemson star considered to be a generational QB talent, is only a true junior, and could still decide to return to college for his senior year.
