Every 76ers fan's nightmare came true on Friday night.
Though we'll have to wait to determine the severity, the ugly injury that Joel Embiid sustained ticked off all the boxes of exactly what you don't want to see happen to your 7-foot MVP candidate. After attempting a dunk in the third quarter against the Wizards, Embiid was knocked off balance in mid-air and landed very awkwardly.
You've been warned: the video is pretty gruesome.
Though a stretcher was brought out onto the floor, Embiid opted to walk off under his own power, not without a significant limp. ESPN's Tim Bontemps observed that Embiid mouthed something along the lines of, "I'm alright," as he walked off, but he couldn't tell for sure.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski added that Embiid will undergo an MRI after the fall.
Though the Sixers have led the Wizards by a large margin for the majority of the game, the outcome of this game is almost meaningless if it meant that Embiid would be lost for a significant chunk of time. A legitimate front-runner for the MVP award, Embiid has dominated his opposition this year, averaging 30.2 points, 11.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists on 52.1/41.6/85.6 shooting and leading Philadelphia to a first-place finish in the first half of the season.
