Josh Allen continues to haunt his past critics. First it was Jalen Ramsey, who dismissed Allen as a “stupid draft pick,” only for the Bills quarterback to annihilate the Rams for five touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) earlier this season. After dropping knowledge on Ramsey (the famously outspoken corner has since amended his stance on Allen), the third-year gunslinger set out to make Seahawks safety Jamal Adams a believer in Week 9. Back when the two were division rivals in the AFC East, Adams didn’t seem particularly impressed with Allen’s skill set, expressing his disdain on Twitter (props to Sporting News for digging these up).
Adams’ criticism did not age well with Allen matching a career-high with 415 passing yards and four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) in an emphatic Bills victory. Allen did take his share of punishment Sunday, absorbing seven sacks with 1.5 of those credited to Adams. But it was still a virtuosic performance by Allen, who outdueled fellow MVP candidate Russell Wilson (four turnovers) in a 44-34 slugfest at Bills Stadium.
The 6’5” Allen was certainly not a finished product coming out of Wyoming, where he often struggled with accuracy. But with a cannon for an arm, prototypical size and above-average mobility, the Bills took a chance on Allen in the first round of the 2018 Draft, hoping he’d blossom into a star someday. It didn’t take long for that day to come with Adams and Ramsey both bearing witness to Allen’s unlikely ascension from risky “project” to upper-echelon NFL starter.
With the 7-2 Bills off to their best start since the Jim Kelly Era, maybe it’s time we stop doubting No. 7.
