NFL quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick is teaming up with the iconic ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's.
The beloved treat-maker announced on Thursday the launch of a new frozen vegan dessert inspired by the free-agent QB, whose silent protest against police violence got him blackballed from the league, called "Change the Whirled."
A press release showed the familiar pint-size Ben & Jerry's carton emblazoned with Kaepernick's face, right fist raised in the air, with the words "I know my rights" written underneath.
The partnership was meant to benefit the Know Your Rights Camp initiative, a project launched by Kaepernick in 2016 to educate young Black and Brown people about interacting with law enforcement officers.
Kaepernick on social media said the aim of the union was to "serve up joy on the journey to justice!"
Ben & Jerry's said "we look forward to working together in the fight for justice and racial equity for a long time to come."
The endorsement is far from Kaepernick's first. The University of Nevada product has maintained his dealings with Nike dating from his playing days, a fateful and fruitful union for both parties, according to the New York Times. He also has deals with Dre Beats and McDonald's.
Kaepernick has remained unsigned since 2016, but has worked out for teams on at least one occasion and maintains he would like another opportunity to play.
Last offseason Commissioner Roger Goodell, amid nationwide protests over the police killing of George Floyd and under pressure from some of the NFL's top stars, admitted the league had gotten it wrong on its response to player protests, and later publicly urged any interested team to go ahead and sign Kaepernick.
Despite Goodell's proclamations, Kaepernick has remained unsigned, even as teams have resorted to third- and fourth-string quarterbacks with players missing time on the covid/reserve list.
