The 3-5 Vikings have underachieved by every conceivable metric this year and middling quarterback Kirk Cousins hasn’t helped any with his 10 interceptions, second-most to Eagles signal-caller Carson Wentz (12). But even with Minnesota unlikely to make the postseason (25.8-percent playoffs odds, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index), Cousins still has a lot going for him. He’s absurdly rich (over $130 million in career earnings), happily married to his wife of six years, taller than I’ll ever dream of being and, perhaps greatest of all, he has the voice of an angel. Listen for yourself.
I couldn’t tell you why this clip went viral today of all days—the footage apparently comes from Cousins’ high school a capella days as a teenager in his native Michigan—but if this 29-second gem doesn’t singlehandedly restore your faith in mankind, I don’t know what will. To quote Prestige Worldwide cofounder Dale Doback, Cousins’ voice is like a combination of Fergie and Jesus. Listen to him belt out classic renditions of “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” (Cousins appears to have been cast in his school’s production of “Oklahoma!”) and “Oh, Pretty Woman.”
While this might be the first you’re hearing of it, Cousins’ hidden talent, at least among friends and teammates, appears to be an open secret. The Pro Bowler’s musical abilities were first alluded to in 2013 when Cousins visited the broadcast booth during the annual Green-White Spring Game at his alma mater, Michigan State. Cousins also showed off his glorious pipes by covering Blink 182’s “First Date” and “Shut Up and Dance” by Walk the Moon during a Nashville studio session in 2018 (props to Adam Thielen for copping a vintage Bobby Boucher jersey in the video seen below).
Who knew the “You like that!” guy was so multi-faceted? So the next time Cousins throws a gut-wrenching pick-six, Vikings fans will think to themselves, “Well, at least he can carry a tune.”
