After finishing runner-up to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Trevor Bauer sweepstakes, the New York Mets apparently are considering other avenues to make another major transaction this offseason.
SNY's Andy Martino reports that the Mets have re-engaged with the Chicago Cubs on former National League MVP Kris Bryant. Martino cautions that "it's unclear how likely it is to happen," but conversations had been halted in early January, and the two sides have since been back in touch regarding Bryant.
Bryant, 29, struggled mightily in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, slashing just .206/.293/.351 in 34 games. But while Bryant may not recapture the form he showed early in his career, he's just two seasons removed from homering 31 times and posting a 4.8 fWAR. If the price is right, Bryant would more than be worth taking a flier on for the Mets, whether they envisioned using him at third base, left field or some combination of the two.
Considering he's entering a contract year, Bryant also has quite a bit of motivation financially to bounce back in 2021.
If acquired, Bryant would join Francisco Lindor, Carlos Carrasco, James McCann, Aaron Loup and Trevor May as offseason acquisitions during Steve Cohen's first offseason as majority owner of the team.
