Kansas City, MO – There's a lot of state pride for people from both Missouri and Kansas, so it might be a bit disappointing to see how those states faired in head-to-head matchups with the other 49.

A new survey asked more than 1,000 Americans to pick the better of two states in a series of questions to find out which states are the best and worst. The results may come as a surprise to some:

As seen in the recent study done by YouGov, Americans picked Hawaii as their number one state and Colorado at No. 2. Rounding out the top five were Virginia, Nevada and North Carolina.

Missouri and Kansas were farther down the list, in the bottom 10, ranking 43rd and 41st on the list, respectively. Overall, the South and Midwest took big hits, with the majority of the bottom 10 coming from those regions.

YouGov says it asked 1,211 US citizens over the age of 18 to participate in the poll, which ran from March 12-15.
