KANSAS CITY - It was 80 years ago this week (1945): with World War II coming to an end, layoffs of thousands of workers took place on a Sunday at Wichita aircraft plants.

In a two-day span during the weekend, Boeing terminated 5,000 employees.

Cessna’s war contracts were all cancelled, and 300 of the company’s workers are set to be laid off tomorrow, on Monday.

Beech also let go a large number of employees.

The International Association of Machinists says approximately 10,000 workers have been terminated, and another 7,000 will be laid off by the first week of September.
