KANSAS CITY - A new twist on the age-old jury duty scam could be circulating in the Wichita area. According to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office, an area resident received a voicemail from someone claiming to be a sheriff sergeant. The message asked the resident to call back right away.

Suspecting the call was a scam, the person who received the voicemail called the number back. The scammer claimed to be a sheriff sergeant and demanded two surety bonds in the amount of $1,200 each to resolve "the Judge's citation and fee" for missing jury duty.

The citizen later searched for the sergeant's name online and found the name on Linkedin. This is apparently how the scammer obtained the law enforcement officer's name.

The District Attorney's Consumer Protection Division wants to remind people a law enforcement organization will never call about missing jury duty, and will never ask for money by a surety bond or cash card. Anyone receiving a call like this is advised to simply hang up.
